Moving mail from one server to another
Question

How do I move mail stored on the server from a mailbox on my old host or account to a mailbox on my new server/account?

Answer

There are a couple different ways you can do this, depending on whether you if you will have access to the old and new mail accounts at the same time or whether you need to delete the old email boxes before you create the new ones.

Case 1 - I'm moving my site from an old host to Cartika and will have access to both the old and new mail boxes at the same time:

1) Set up the old email account in an email program on your local computer (ie, Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.) and select the IMAP option instead of POP3. When you connect to the account with IMAP you will be able to see all the folders and the mail contained therein.

2) Set up the new email account in the same email program and select IMAP option.

3) Drag and drop the email from each of the folders listed under the old IMAP email account to the new IMAP email account.

Case 2 (Resellers) - I'm moving an account from one server to another in Cartika, so I need to delete the old account before I can add the new one, and I don't want to lose mail that's saved on the server.

1) Set up the account in an email program on your local computer (ie, Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.) and select the IMAP option instead of POP3. When you connect to the account with IMAP you will be able to see all the folders and the mail contained therein.

2) Create the folders with the same names under the Local folders area in your email program.

3) Drag and drop the email from each of the folders listed under the IMAP account to the newly created folder on Local. This will give you a copy of all the messages on your local computer.

4) After you set up the email box on the new mail server, you can then set up an IMAP account in your mail program on your computer and create the folders on the new server via IMAP. Then just drag/drop all the messages from the Local folders into the folders on the new mail server.
